Generative AI
This resource originated as a primary-source appendix for presentations on Generative AI we began delivering in December 2022. We are still going (700 slides and counting). We offer introductory presentations for larger audiences still getting up to speed. We partner with law firms on CLEs that address the many legal and regulatory considerations that add to complexity and impact strategy. We lead high-level conversations among informed stakeholders re real-world use cases. Feel free to reach out.
As the presentation has grown, so has the appendix, to the point where we’ve added both supplemental material (that is not in the presentation) and maintained historical materials (fallen out of the presentation given how quickly the topic moves). The resource is comprehensive in-so-far as it contains a primary source for every slide in the presentation. But we think a truly comprehensive resource that encompasses the vast and rapidly evolving subject of Generative AI would be impossible. We’re giving you a lot. But we would never pretend to be offering everything. Though if you see a glaring hole, feel free to reach out. We’re always looking to make this resource more valuable.

Microsoft is experimenting with AI-powered features for built-in Windows apps like Photos, Snipping Tool, and Paint. Potential features include optical character recognition (OCR) for text extraction from images, object recognition in photos, and generative AI for image creation based on text prompts. Some features may rely on a neural processing unit (NPU) in PC processors, enhancing local AI processing. NPUs can address privacy concerns by enabling AI tasks to be performed locally. These features aim to improve user experiences and productivity within Windows applications, following trends seen in other platforms like Apple's macOS and iOS.

Building LLM-powered applications involves more than just the model. Challenges include deploying and managing applications, navigating cloud resources, tracking performance, access control, credential management, and budgeting for costs. The evolving nature of LLM applications amplifies these challenges, requiring a focus on data, cloud infrastructure, and cost management for successful development.

AI hype fails to deliver. Microsoft's $10 billion AI investment in Bing didn't increase market share. Google's AI also faces issues. AI-generated errors drive users to alternatives. Real tech breakthroughs grow rapidly; AI shows signs of a fad. Many cracks in the AI story, including legal issues and misuse. AI used for scams, cheating, and misinformation. Consumer demand is low; skepticism is high. Corporations hide AI use. The AI revolution faces challenges and backlash.

Meta releases open AI models, like Llama 2, but with usage restrictions. Carnegie Mellon, AI Now Institute, and Signal Foundation caution that "open" AI models may come with limitations. Truly open source AI models, like GPT Neo, face hurdles due to data secrecy, corporate control of software frameworks, high training costs, and resource disparities. Concerns arise over centralizing AI power in few companies like Meta, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Calls for meaningful AI regulations and openness to unleash AI's potential.

OECD: Lawyers "high risk" due to AI, skepticism in the US. LexisNexis survey: France and Canada positive, US unsure. AI impact varies, from research to drafting docs. AI is inevitable for law.
